Something is not adding up in Queensland. We are forced by the Queensland Labor government to have our pristine water fluoridated.

According to "World Vision," the average water use in Australia is around 282 litres per person per day. A person is supposed to drink 2 litres of water per day and the rest, 280 litres of fluoridated water goes down the drain and finishes up in the ocean and the Great Barrier Reef.

The question begs, why does all the water need to be fluoridated when only two litres per person is consumed and, wrongly perceived for the good of oral health? What about if the person has dentures, which a large number of our population have, why do they have to ingest this poison, for the sake of "denture" health perhaps?

This doesn't make sense, yet this government has the hide to compel farmers to stop the run-off of fertilisers and chemicals from their farms so that it won't pollute the ocean. How are they going to do this, build walls around their paddocks? How hypocritical that this government won't stop the fluoridated water from flowing into the ocean and the reef?

97% of European countries have woken up to the misguided advice and stopped the fluoridation of their drinking water, the remaining three percent put fluoride in salt so people have a choice.

It has been proven by the latest research, which unfortunately the Qld government ignored, is that sodium fluoride will not reduce tooth decay. What is needed for good teeth is calcium fluoride and this occurs naturally in a lot of water. The Queensland government avoids the word “sodium” and just talks about fluoride. Sodium fluoride is highly toxic and highly dangerous for children up to six of age. People who have problems with the thyroid gland will have a big health problem on their hand by ingesting sodium fluoridated water – that is why Cairns Councillor Linda Cooper is so much against the mandatory fluoridation of our pristine drinking water.

Sodium fluoride is a by-product of the aluminium and chemical industry and we all know how bad aluminium is for our body and health. How ludicrous is this: Belgium is one of the many European countries that has stopped adding sodium fluoride to their drinking water, yet this government is buying this toxic substance from them and want to put in our water. They must say; this is a godsend as nobody else wants this stuff.

When this Labor government legislated for mandatory fluoridation, it put in a clause that said: “Should anyone get sick or die from the ingestion of sodium fluoride, the Labor government cannot be made responsible or be sued.” This says a lot. This government also paid $220.000 to the Queensland branch of the dental association to peddle their propaganda.

Statement on drinking water fluoridation
The Canadian Association of Physicians for the Environment (CAPE) does not support fluoridation of drinking water for the following reasons.
1) The decline in caries in communities that are fluoridated has been highly significant — but so has the decline that has occurred in non-fluoridated communities. There has, in fact, been a general decline in dental caries throughout the Western world, and the decline in fluoridated cities has not exceeded that in non-fluoridated communities. For example, BC drinking water is 95% non-fluoridated, whereas drinking water in Alberta is 75% fluoridated; yet the two provinces have similar rates of caries. Furthermore, Europe is 98% non-fluoridated, but global European dental health is generally equivalent to or better than that in North America. Whatever the reason for the decline in dental caries, it can not be concluded that it is the result of drinking water fluoridation.
2) The incidence of toxic effects in humans from fluoridation may well have been underestimated. The most serious potential association is with osteosarcoma in boys, which appears to have been loosely associated with age of exposure to fluoride. It is true that the CDC has (as has the original researcher) acknowledged that current data are tentative, but a further larger-scale study is pending from the Harvard School of Dentistry. At the very least, such data are grounds for caution.
3) Animal studies have shown a wide range of adverse effects associated with fluoride. It has been shown to be a potential immunotoxin, embryotoxin, neurotoxin and harmful to bony tissues, including both dental and ordinary bone. In addition, it can damage (inhibit) thyroid function in several species, including humans. Its effect on ecosystem balance has been little researched, but is unlikely to be positive.
4) The intake of fluoride from drinking water is uncontrolled, and can lead to dental fluorosis in children who are inclined to drink large amounts of water. Both natural and artificially fluoridated water can cause this effect, which is, of course, simply a visible representation of an effect on the entire bony skeleton. The cost of repairing teeth damaged by fluorosis is not trivial; moderate to severe effects can require $15,000 or more in dental fees.
It seems clear that a) fluoridation is unlikely to be the cause of the decline in caries in Europe and North America b) the potential for adverse effects is real and current evidence points in the direction of caution. Over the last decade, recommendations with respect to acceptable fluoride exposure have steadily declined, and cautions have increased. Any dental benefit that may accrue from fluoride exposure is fully achieved by controlled topical application of fluoride compounds by trained dental professionals, not by fluoride ingestion. [The analysis of Dr. Hardy Limeback, Head, Preventive Dentistry, at the University of Toronto, further clarifies these points.]
On the basis of this “weight of evidence” we believe that fluoridation of drinking water is scientifically untenable, and should not be part of a public health initiative or program.

In conclusion a quote from George Bernard Shaw: “Those who cannot change their minds cannot change anything.” Unquote.

Hey Werner,

You're nuts, you know. Bonkers. Smart as a bag of hammers.

Your "facts" are just anti-fluoride propaganda, which is easily debunked.

A little fluoride never hurt anyone. And the long term benefits, especially for children, is vital. Dental health is intricately related to other internal health problems including cancer and heart disease.

You've lost this one, Werner. Move on.

Mr. Schmidlin

Why can't you cite any Australian research or data to support your lefty views? All this European stuff is suspect, at best.

Can't even quote a "famous Australian", instead you pull out some Irish playwright hack.

Werner Schmidlin a lefty???? Hahahaha
You obviously don't read his contributions in the letters section in the ComPost.

Clifton Ratbag, whatever you think of Werner Schmidlin's view re water at least he presents his argument in an intelligent, respectful and articulate way. On the other hand I found your response rude, boorish and disrespectful to the point where it discounted any view you may have about the matter. I think if I have to make a decision about flouride in water I would listen to some like Werner who delivered his argument in an informed and non adversarial way Regards Erica

Werner, Werner, of course people with dentures don't need fluoride. But why have they got dentures? Think about it man, I'm sure it will come to you.
A tip: If you don't want to participate, a small tank at the end of one downpipe will provide you and Karolin with all the drinking water you'll ever need.
Cheers, Tom (Asquith)

Werner and his beloved Nationals are at it again. Getting on the fluoride band-wagon when all they did when voting the legislation was ask for only 2 amendments. They didn't OPPOSE IT TOTALLY !
I want to know where all these skeletal, sick people are living in N.S.W. when they have had fluoride in their water for over 30 years. It's just like objecting to The Pill, Polio vaccination, Imunisation of any type, and Penicillin when they were first introduced. There will always be the fanaticals who really haven't looked to the left or right but put their reliable blinkers on. They do it when they go to the Polls also. LNP = Look No Policies !!!

I can only assume all of you that are bagging Werner must have bad teeth, and are too lazy to brush.

Personally, I've grown up in Cairns and have never had teeth problems, neither have any of my family. Now I have kids, who also brush their teeth and have no problems. Its not hard. All you need to do is bruch your teeth twice a day, and not have too much sugary crap in your diet.

But no, all you pro-flouride people with bad teeth want to medicate the rest of us that have looked after our teeth. If you all want flouride, then go get tablets. They're free from council. Leave our water supply alone.

Drink rainwater from your tanks Werner. That's what I and probably many others will be doing.
