Maybe the reason that Cairns has so much crime is the fact that it apears to have no sense of community. It seems to be a city designed for the sole purpose of attracting tourists. Walk around the city at night and all you will see (and hear) is young people getting louder and louder as they get drunker and drunker. Most of the young people I have spoken to say they came to Cairns to get "pissed" and have a good time. Maybe what the tourist gurus need to do is make a bigger effort to attract a greater rang of tourist and give them better facilities and service. How about Pedestrianising more of Cairns city centre, Create areas with pavement cafes etc Create an environment where people want to stay and come back to instead of aiming for the lowest common denominator that gets the easiest money and pumps in tourist as though they were just cash machines. But most of all create an environment where locals feel included to. In the narow minded focus to get as many tourist as possible we have forgoten that people live here all year round. we deserve better in our own town
