Council dishes out $116,000 to community

Cairns Regional Council have awarded community funding grants totalling $116,000.
Only 13 applicants received grants this round, out of around 100 applications, that totalled $160,000. It would be a fairer system if many groups got a smaller amount, therefore a far greater number of organisations could share the benefit form the annual budgeted $190,000 from the community grants scheme. This would encourage a degree of fundraising, with a percentage upfront from Council.
Those wanting to apply for Round Two, should submit applications by the end of August. Contact Joy Wii on 4044 3351, if you have any questions about your application.
The grants are for not-for-profit and charitable organisations. Individual can also apply who carry out an activity for a public purpose and the primary objective is not directed at making a profit. You'll also need to demonstrate a strong community benefit or need. Commercial, political, discriminatory groups, or businesses, including schools, universities, are not eligible.

I disagree Michael, none of these grants are large (all under $10k) and to get any value for expenditure I have found it better to fund a smaller number to a effective degree, than provide amounts too small to make a difference. I am sure all these groups fundraised as well.
