Tilting at Windmills

Pete Johnston and his partner Jude, have been campaigners for northern beach interests, living at Clifton Beach, where they have seen substancial high-rise encroaching on all sides of their beloved neighbourhood.

"It was this that made me want to stand for Council," he told CairnsBlog. He will run for Division 10, being the only candidate south of Port Douglas to do so.

Ever a fan of Don Quixote, The Man of La Mancha, Pete now hurls down his gauntlet to thee. Pete will run as an independent for the Cairns Regional Council.

His Dream is that one day Council will act in open and transparent manner and decisions affecting residents will no longer be made behind closed doors.

"I hope that one day, our Council will consult with us, not inform us, of faits accompli after the fact," he says.

Residents should also enjoy equal rights with developers, Pete Johnston says.

"I dream that one day, heritage and icon status will not be ridiculed, but will be respected and preserved," he says.

"I hope that our Council will look beyond the boom and bust property speculation cycle, to the long-term future of the region."

"The planning scheme should be for the future of our region and should be trusted. It should not be set aside at the next developer's whim.

"This does not have to be an 'impossible dream', says Pete.

It’s about time we had a strong candidate from the beaches. Congratulations Pete and best of luck in the coming election. As a resident of the northern beaches I’m as pleased as punch to be rid of that bloody useless Sno Bonneau the de-facto member of the Unity Team. Oh sorry Sno was that supposed to be a secret, if you believe you have any secrets left you’re a bigger fool that we have given you credit for.
