Police are trying to retrace the movements of a 20-year-old German woman, between 12:15am to 1:30am - Tuesday morning.The visitor to Cairns was captured in this camera footage at Gillagan's Backpackers around 7pm on Monday evening, around six hours before her assault in the grounds of Cairns State High School, in the early hours yesterday, at around 1:30am.
The woman was found suffering from head injuries at the corner of Grove and Sheridan streets and taken to Cairns Base Hospital.
Detective Inspector Hartwell of Cairns Police stressed that she was not raped, as some media have said.
"I am disappointed that media had been reporting it was a rape. This is not the case and it is causing distress to the young woman," Detective Inspector Hartwell said today.
Cairns State High School was closed on Tuesday to enable forensic officers access.
Cairns Criminal Investigation Branch are appealing for anyone who may have seen the woman earlier in the evening, or anyone who may have noticed someone loitering around the Cairns High School or in Grove or Sheridan streets last evening or early this morning to contact them.
The woman is described as Caucasian in appearance, 165-170cms tall with a medium build and short dark hair. She was wearing long black leggings underneath a grey shirt dress with a black motif on the front.
"We are also appealing for anyone who may have located a grey handbag containing personal ID, a wallet and phone to immediately contact them," Detective Inspector Hartwell said. "Should these items be found please do not handle the property but contact police immediately."
The video shows the victim wearing a grey shirt/black trousers.
