683 quakes since big Christchurch shake

Since the massive 7.1 earthquake rocked Christchurch and surrounding communities at 4:36am on Saturday 4th September, there has been 683 after-shocks, many are substantial quakes in their own right.

There were nine quakes overnight, six in one-hour around 10:30pm, one measuring 4.4 magnitude - 39 in the last 24 hours alone.

At least 100,000 were seriously damaged and many old and historic buildings are being demolished in the aftermath of New Zealand's biggest natural disaster, that is expected to cost up to $3 billion. Stunningly, no one person died in the quake, largely due to the early morning hour it struck.

The ongoing geological movement that is occurring on New Zealand's South Island, is causing close interest from geologists and seismologists from around the world.
