My Kiwi political friend Michael Wallmannsberger, sent these snaps this morning, on the way to Mt Ngauruhoe, an active volcano in the central North Island of New Zealand (it's an island off the coast of Australia).
Ngauruhoe is the youngest vent in the Tongariro volcanic area, first erupting only 2,500 years ago, unlike Undara's volcanos 340 kms West of Cairns, that were active 190,000 years ago.
It has erupted 45 times in the last 100 years, the last time in 1977. This volcano was made famous as Mount Doom in The Lord of the Rings movie.
I wish I was there skiing like we all used to do every winter.

Mike, you know that the view is of Ruapehu in the top photo, and the skifield is also on Ruapehu, Ngarahoe is the one in the distance viewed from the skifield. However, Ruapehu is still an active volcano as well.
I have photos of Ruapehu erupting during a holiday we took there in 2007. And it was a full moon too. An amazing experience.
