As part of FestiVAL Cairns, there's a interesting new event on this year where anyone can participate as a speaker.
Local Toastmasters Clubs are putting on an I Love Cairns speech contest. So, if you love Cairns, and are sick of moaning to the Cairns Post about what's wrong, then here's your chance to tell it out loud, and with a real audience.
The heats will be on at the Shangri-la events centre next Saturday and the finals 29th August in Speakers Corner City Place.
Applications were meant to be in this weekend, but if you hurry, I think they'll accept it. Grab the form and all details on the I Love Cairns website.
It's only $10 each or $5 if you're desperate, destitute student, however there is a $500 prize if you're better than Kaj Haffenden or Nicky Jurd.
The Cairns Regional Council is sponsoring the event.
Even though the theme of the competition is "I Love Cairns", you can name your 5 - 7 minute speech whatever you like.
"Your speech can be serious or entertaining; humorous or heart wrenching," Pauline Douglas says. "It can be a tall tale or factual, as long as it's in some way inspiring and tells us how you, or those around you, care about this wonderful part of Far North Queensland."
Pauline says that Cairns is a truly fabulous place to call home and there is no better way for us all to get truly excited about where we live, than with a fun speech about Cairns.
Pauline denied rumours that former Mayor Kevin Byrne will be presenting his "Why I will run for Mayor in 2012" speech.

Thanks Mike for promoting the I Love Cairns Speech Competition.
A recent development is that we will have Andrew Matthews as our Guest Speaker, and he's the Author and Live Cartoonist who wrote the "Happiness Now" Books that are sold all across the world and produced in 33 languages.
The last time I bumped into Kevin Byrne was at Bunnings at Christmas time ... they had run out of Christmas Lights, so we both missed out.
Do you have any news on Kevin?
Pauline Douglas
