Professor John McBride wants you to go to the pub

Now here's something that you don't get told by your teacher every day.

James Cook University's Professor John McBride is offering you a free drink tomorrow evening in a way to entice to the Cairns Courthouse hotel,

The event is organised by JCU’s Faculty of Medicine, Health and Molecular Sciences, in the Courthouse Public Lecture Series. The relaxed venue for the presentation, called 'Hot and sweaty in Cairns...the fevers of northern Queensland', is bound to get most of the Cairns Post staff to trundle along the street for a free beer and an excuse to sneak away from the office whilst Damon is having a cigi break.

They say fevers could be lurking in the rainforests, farms and the cities of the region.

"Nasty bugs that can make you very sick," Professor McBride says, who will take you on a tour of the diseases in our region. "Some are common, some are rare, all are interesting."

"Hear about Dengue, Leptospirosis, Scrub typhus, Malaria, the mysterious ‘Daintree ulcer’ and many more."

Professor McBride, who is an infectious diseases specialist who has lived in north Queensland since the early 90s, will suggest how to minimise your chances of catching one of these diseases and what to do if you get one. He teaches at the Cairns Base Hospital campus of JCU’s School of Medicine and Dentistry.

WHEN: Wednesday 6th October, 5.30pm (free drink on arrival)
WHERE: Courthouse Hotel, 38 Abbott Street, Cairns
