Schmidlin and the great fluoridation debate

Werner Schmidlin, a vocal proponent of the anti-fluoride lobby, highlight the reasons why we need to seriously consider the forced fluoridation of Queensland's domestic water supply.

Despite the gloomy outlook in all directions, I'd like to inject a bit more gloom and bring up the fluoridation issue again.

The deadline is nearing when we are forced to ingest sodium fluoride a hazardous waste product from the aluminium and fertiliser industries that will be added to our pristine drinking water.

I’m thinking back to the days when thalidomide, a sedative and hypnotic drug that was considered good for pregnant women, but it was withdrawn from sale after many years when it was discovered that it causes severe birth defects because it inhibits angiogenesis. Also way back asbestos and smoking was “healthy” but it took years again to tell that they were not.

Now this Queensland government tells how good sodium fluoride is for us and one has to wonder how many years it will take them before they read the overwhelming present-day evidence that it is not good for us and has no effect on tooth decay whatsoever and statistics on hand can prove that.

I have just read Jan Sharrock’s story in the Cairns Bulletin of how fluoride in the Townsville water affected her thyroid gland and played havoc with her health and made her move to Cairns only to be confronted again with this evil substance. However Jan is not alone, there are hundreds with thyroid problems and they certainly don’t look forward to have their physical discomfort attributed to fluoride ingestion exasperated.

Jan Sharrock is a committee member of our Cairns anti-fluoride group.

I have just read the book by Barry Groves, entitled; Fluoride. Drinking ourselves to death? Apart from the interesting statistics that prove there is no difference in tooth decay between the fluoridated and un-fluoridated communities around the world, another interesting discovery is, that mostly the English speaking countries, emanating from the USA, are hell-bent on fluoridating our water.

Another interesting read is the award winning journalist and former BBC producer Christopher Bryson's The Fluoride Deception. I haven’t read this yet, but my daughter in Brisbane, Sonja Hardy, has read it and sent me this summary:
  • “Do you enjoy tales of intrigue, conspiracy and corruption? Then The Fluoride Deception by Christopher Bryson won’t disappoint. It’s a very well-written, meticulously researched exposé of the history of fluoridation, which Dr Robert Carton (formerly of the US Environmental Protection Agency) has described as “the greatest case of scientific fraud of this (20th) century, if not of all time”.
It’s a history of greed, collusion, personal aggrandizement, corporate and government cover-up,” littered with human tragedy and the tattered careers of scientists who dared to try to expose the truth.
  • “The Fluoride Deception reveals how a secretive group of powerful industries, all of which faced extensive litigation for fluoride pollution, collaborated with officials from the National Institute of Dental Research to launder fluoride’s public image.” It also points out the significant and wide-ranging health concerns of long-term consumption of even minute quantities of this poison, for its supposed benefit in preventing tooth decay.

There is growing scientific evidence that consuming fluoridated water provides little, if any benefit to dental health, and that the risks far outweigh any possible benefit.

If you value your health and that of your loved ones, educate yourself about water fluoridation, and help to spread the word. The Fluoride Deception is a good place to start.

I found it compulsive reading – as good as any conspiracy novel you’d ever read. Unfortunately, however, this is not a work of fiction.

Werner Schmidlin is a person who reaches a conclusion and then goes looking for the evidence to support it. Clearly, there is lots of "evidence" out there which will support what he claims. But there is even more which doesn't.
Werner, just as an exercise in balance, try being the devil's advocate and reporting all you can find on the web supporting the addition of fluoride to our water. While there, find sites which claim smoking is NOT a health hazard, that Harold Holt went off in a Chinese submarine, and that aliens are watching us. It's all there, the weird and the wonderful masquerading as "fact". Finding the info is easy, the trick is sorting the fact from the fiction.

Werner uses Thalidomide as an example. Thalidomide did cause birth defects and it was no longer given to pregnant woman. Thalidomide is also used to treat people with Multiple Myeloma. From the bad came some good.

Fluoridation Ineffective & Harmful, studies show

Fluoridation Opposition: Scientific, Respectable & Growing

Over 2,380 professionals urge the US Congress to stop water fluoridation until Congressional hearings are conducted, citing scientific evidence that fluoridation, long promoted to fight tooth decay, is ineffective and has serious health risks. See statement: http://www.fluorideaction.org/statement.august.2007.html.

Also, eleven Environmental Protection Agency employee unions representing over 7000 environmental and public health professionals called for a moratorium on drinking water fluoridation programs across the country, and have asked EPA management to recognize fluoride as posing a serious risk of causing cancer in people. (1a)

Last election day, 53 US cities rejected fluoridation joining a growing list of communities saying "No," to fluoridation. (1)

-- The Canadian Association of Physicians for the Environment, Canada’s leading voice on environmental health issues, released a statement opposing fluoridation. (2)

-- The National Kidney Foundation dropped its fluoridation support replacing it with this caution: “Individuals with CKD [Chronic Kidney Disease] should be notified of the potential risk of fluoride exposure.” (3)

-- Researchers reporting in the Oct 6 2007 British Medical Journal indicate that fluoridation never was proven safe or effective and may be unethical. (4)

-- “A qualitative review of ...studies found a consistent and strong association between the exposure to fluoride and low IQ,” concluded Tang el al., in "Fluoride and Children’s Intelligence: A Meta-analysis” in Biological Trace Element Research (5)

-- Scientific American editors wrote in January 2008, "Some recent studies suggest that over-consumption of fluoride can raise the risks of disorders affecting teeth, bones, the brain and the thyroid gland"

-- Dr. A. K. Susheela, a leading fluoride expert, explains in a video why US physicians overlook fluoride as a possible cause of diseases commonly caused by fluoride. http://tinyurl.com/Susheela

-- A study in the Fall 2008 Journal of Public Health Dentistry reveals that cavity-free teeth have little to do with fluoride intake. Researchers report, "The benefits of fluoride are mostly topical…while fluorosis is clearly more dependent on fluoride intake."

A Tennessee State legislator who is also an MD is urging all Tennessee Water Districts to stop fluoridation, reported a Tennessee newspaper on 11/29/08. At least 30 Tennessee water districts have already complied with his request.(6)

On 1/5/09, the Burlington Board of Health recommended that Burlington cease fluoridation because fluoridation can harm some people. (7)

On 1/6/09, a Canadian town, Drayton, stopped fluoridation, not to save money, but because it was in the best interests of residents, said the Mayor. (8)

On 2/10/2009 Skagit County, WA officials reversed their 2007 fluoridation decision. (9)

On 3/3/2009, Plainfield, Vermont bans fluoridation. (10)

The Arkansas Oral Health Director is accused of giving eight "false or misleading statements" on fluoridation to an Arkansas legislative Committee. (12)

Nobel Prize winner in Medicine, Dr. Arvid Carlsson, says, “Fluoridation is against all principles of modern pharmacology. It's really obsolete.”

Fluoride jeopardizes health - even at low levels deliberately added to public water supplies, according to data presented in a 2006 National Academy of Sciences' (NAS) National Research Council (NRC) report. Fluoride poses risks to the thyroid gland, diabetics, kidney patients, high water drinkers and others and can severely damage children's teeth. (11) At least three panel members advise avoiding fluoridated water.

“The NRC fluoride report dramatically changed scientific understanding of fluoride's health risks," says Paul Connett, PhD, Executive Director, Fluoride Action Network. "Government officials who continue to promote fluoridation must testify under oath as to why they are ignoring the powerful evidence of harm in the NRC report,” he added.

The Professionals’ Statement also references:

-- The new American Dental Association policy recommending infant formula NOT be prepared with fluoridated water.

-- The CDC’s concession that the predominant benefit of fluoride is topical not systemic.

-- CDC data showing that dental fluorosis, caused by fluoride over-exposure, now impacts one third of American children.

-- Major research indicating little difference in decay rates between fluoridated and non-fluoridated communities.

-- A Harvard study indicating a possible link between fluoridation and bone cancer.

The Environmental Working Group (EWG), a DC watchdog, revealed that a Harvard professor concealed the fluoridation/bone cancer connection for three years. EWG President Ken Cook states, “It is time for the US to recognize that fluoridation has serious risks that far outweigh any minor benefits, and unlike many other environmental issues, it's as easy to end as turning off a valve at the water plant.”

Promoters of water fluoridation lie when they claim that fluoridated water does not increase the incidence of cancer.

I quote the US Attorney at Law Janie Evins: "In the early 1990's, with trials of 11, 14 and 40 days to allow for extensive expert witness testimony, courts in Illinois, Texas and Pennsylvania each came to the same conclusion: fluoride at one part per million in the water, a) aggravates existing illnesses, b) causes adverse health effects, and c) contributes to a significant increase in cancer deaths."

Attorney Evins wrote this in a legal letter dated 19/02/09 that she sent to the Oral Health Director of the Arkansas Department of Health, Dr Lynn Mouden who had made false claims about fluoridation in order to promote the practice.

The letter is accessible via this link http://fluoridealert.org/arkansas.2-19-09.letter.pdf and would be an eye-opener for those who believe the lies about fluoridation's safety that are peddled by the government and other promoters of water fluoridation.

I've never been involved in the debate over flouridation and don't have a strong view about the science (I've never looked into it) - although I am dubious in general about compulsory mass medication.

What does strike me, after reading through comments so far on this article, is how the opponents have provided copious references; proponents, so far, seem to have responded only with scorn and abuse.

Where are the well-informed dentists, scientists and politicians who support compulsory flouridation? Why aren't they making a stronger case - or any case at all, for that matter?

Critics don't disppear because you ignore them.

Why don't YOU G Shultz, go wash your filthy beligerant mouth out, with fluorosilicated chemical... but perhaps you like poisoned water?
Pity you don't give a damn about babies (who cannot eliminate more than 20% of Fluorosilicate); Renal patients (they don't use tap water in dialisis units - tell us 'why' G Shultz); or any people who already have their teeth - ingested Fluorosilicate does NOTHING to help teeth - it is only topical application, spat out after application, that works.

And Kitchenslut, if the tablets are so bad, then why don't you just bruch your teeth twice a day. Its worked for me, and I've lived with Cairns' non-flouridated water my whole life.

I don't like the government forcing me to consume anything - whether it's good or bad for me. It is against my basic (liberal) principles.

My concern is also that this adding of fluor to water sets a dangerous precedent. What's next? Vitamins?

I propose a state-wide referendum on this issue, which is clearly very controversial. In a democratic society, what the majority wants should be the go. You will only find out what the people want when you get the opinion from the silent majority that don't blog, write letters, texts etc. And if the majority wants fluor, well then I may just have to get a rainwater tank indeed.

Kitchenslut, may I point out to you that the whole idea of collective health care (public or private) is that we all pay for each other's medical treatments? You are pulling the debate to the arena of, should be pay for cardiac treatment of someone who only eats hamburgers and fries? What about the person that needs treatment for lung cancer due to smoking? This is another issue altogether in my view.

And really, if the government is serious about dental health, then why is it not included in Medicare? Or, why isn't there an option, for a nominal fee, to have dental health included in Medicare for those who can't afford private health care?

For the small sin of supporting fluoridation I have now been accused of bad breath, gapped teeth, a foul mind, questionable morality, family connections questioned, and posed the emotional blackmail of whether i have seen anyone die of kidney disease as though this was relevant?!

Can we see a pattern here?

Well to the last the answer is yes and the only time i have ever kissed a man on the lips was in the seconds after my Dad passed away in probably the most emotional moment of my life (he lived most of his life on untreated tank water) ultimately as a result of renal tumour and kidney failure although thankfully at those moments we all know that good GP’s do their euthanasia bit!

Mind you I don’t think this is necessarily a bad thing on Cairnsblog and is more likely positive for it exposes a morality that is hidden only to come out and play with phenomena like Pauline Hanson and the fruitloops of society that need to be more openly exposed and questioned regularly rather than waiting for the ugly exposures.

I’m curious about many accusatory comments here and re family my brother is actually a well qualified dentist and an examiner on the board for a principal professional body! That’s irrelevant because what is obvious is that any debate on science is also irrelevant? Oh, please! I don’t claim absolute victory on this scientifically but rather that posted comments confirm that science is irrelevant and morality premium?

For the anti fluoridationists here there is little science but much morality! The sanctimoniously named ‘truthfreedomcompassion’even has the pretencious morality to distinguish between good dentists and bad based on their support for fluoride? Seriously? Does George Dubya live still in the fluoride debate?

Even more confusing is the accusation that amoral unenlightened dentists somehow benefit from fluoridation? Huh? How? As far as I know even the opponents haven’t questioned the benefits to dental care but claim other side effects? The disturbing moral elements exposed here are simply disgusting!

Yes, it is obviously a moral rather than scientific issue for those most fervent! I proudly defend the Kitchenslut brand from assault here and the name has no sleaziness or disrespect for women, rather the reverse, it was derived from a London Review of Books publication of personals where a woman profiled herself as a ‘slut in the kitchen and a chef in the bedroom’. Intended as a tongue in cheek celebration of life apparently lost on many? Too many puritanical wowserish comments here recently from fluoridation to Carnivale?

Regardless I will defer to the greatest improviser of the language in his day .....

KitchenSlut, if you were to do a bit of reading about the topic – perhaps on some of the links provided by other bloggers – you might discover that water fluoridation was a scam from the beginning.

Google Christopher Bryson to see this award winning investigative journalist interviewed about his meticulously researched book, The Fluoride Deception. The myth that water fluoridation is safe and effective continues to be perpetuated by those with vested interests.

According to Dr Hardy Limeback, Professor of Preventive Dentistry at Toronto University, more money is spent on treatment of dental fluorosis – which is caused by fluoride - than on dental decay. And we can expect more than 30% of children who grow up in fluoridated areas to suffer from this disfiguring condition, which is not just a cosmetic problem, but an outward sign that other parts of the body have been affected by fluoride toxicity.

There is also clear evidence from a study done in the United Kingdom that in areas that have been fluoridated for a significant amount of time, there are more dentists, and the expenditure per head of population on dental work is greater. (See pages 172 – 175 of Fluoride: Drinking ourselves To Death? by Barry Groves). No wonder so many dentists support fluoridation.

Kitchenslut, unfortunately, this debate on such a non-emotive substance as fluoride, has become very emotional.

Your arguments can be easily reversed; why not add fluor to your own drinking water and let me consume whatever I want to?I have nothing against fluoride, I reaped the benefits from my parents giving me a fluor tablet every night when I was a child and decent (medicare covered) dental care (and even dental education in schools) while I lived in Holland, where by the way, in the seventies, it was ruled that the government has no right to interfere with the rights of the individual (to decide what it wishes to consume).

Again, I am not anti fluoride; I brush my teeth with it daily. I am anti a government forcing me to consume anything, no matter what it is!
