Parking in the dark

Thursday's Cairns Post talks about the loss of 60 city car parking spaces for the proposed enlargement of the city transport mall.
The inadequate bus terminal now identified by the State Government are "working closely with Cairns City Council to try and achieve this".

What a pity it was our own Kevin Byrne who, behind closed doors, with the full agreement of the State Government's Cairns Port Authority, Advance Cairns, TTNQ and a few other 'interested' parties, decided the historic Aquatic Yacht Club must go to allow for the development of the Trinity Wharf site.
The original site had an existing tourist transport terminal with room for expansion.

With the plan now to sell this land for a proposed development of at least five more multi-story high-rise buildings, city traders and the public alike will find another 350 car parking spaces as well as our waterfront amenities and views totally obliterated.

What a win for our State government: $150 to $200 million to Brisbane, and for Cairns the loss of over 400 city car parks.
But, it is not all bad - probably another million to be raised in car parking revenue and Council's very good mates get to build another cluster of high-rise high-density waterfront boxes that of course will be available for the locals to purchase.

How about this for a slogan...
"WILL THE LAST LOCAL SHOPPING, DINING OR LOOKING FOR ENTERTAINMENT IN CAIRNS, PLEASE TURN THE LIGHTS OUT?"
