See and hear the new candidates

The new candidates running for Cairns Regional Council are not only coming with new ideas about how to run our region, they are campaigning differently.

I've talked about Robert Pyne's approach to engaging his community as I highlighted last week, when he launched his Division 3 campaign onto YouTube.

Val Schier and her Cairns 1st team have also started this approach as yet another way to get in touch with voters.

With many thousands new people residing around the region since the last Council election in 2004, it is imperative to educate these people who don't have as much history about the institutional ills of the current Council.

With the busy life we lead these days, distributing video messages is not only innovative, it allows those in our diverse and geographical remote areas of the electorate to get a closer feel for those presenting themselves for the election.

Val Schier, who is running for mayor for the second time, has also set up her own YouTube channel. In a series of short video messages, she talks about better tropical design, visiting smaller communities and balancing economy, environment and people.

Here's a couple of Val's videos...
