Five out of five

The Post asked five locals if they think enough is being done to protect older buildings, and this is what they said...

ANNA GARRETT, Manunda
No.
Heritage buildings help make Cairns what it is. Compromise needs to happen otherwise Cairns will loose it's special character.

PHIL MILLER, North Cairns
No.
What, there are old buildings in Cairns? Looks like they are all units to me!

RANDY JEFFERSON, Manoora
No.
Soon our only heritage will be Cairns Central.

CATERINA TOLOMEO, North Cairns
No.
It's terrible. Now it's all ugly boxes. We risk loosing our soul.

NICOLAS MILLS, Gordonvale
No.
The town is one big shopping centre these days. Developers need to take on social and cultural legacy into their profit making.

Rather compelling, don't you think. And do you think any Councillor will listen to the residents. Please?

Just how many heritage buildings do we have left anyway? Half a dozen? Ohhhh, but you should have seen Cairns in the early 1970s...
it was a true tropical frontiers town. Sigh.
