Cyclone season warming up

I'm a weather nut. I remember being glued to my Internet, in-between three power drop outs, as Cyclone Larry approached the coast, the morning of Monday March 20, 2006.

The category 5 storm crossed the coast at around 6:20am, reaching close to 300kph winds. It was an incredibly exhilarating experience to go through.

We don't know what's in store this season, however the Bureau of Meteorology says there's a chance the first cyclone of the season, may form in the next few days, as it issued a strong wind warning.

The coastal waters wind warning for Cape Moreton to Point Danger, issued tonight at 8:45 pm EST, says there's fresh to strong N/NE winds, but expected to ease during the morning and then re-develop Thursday afternoon.
  • Cape Moreton to Point Danger including Moreton Bay N/NE winds at 25/30 knots are expected to ease to 15/20 knots during the morning.

Expect N/NE winds 25/30 knots to re-develop Thursday afternoon. Seas 2.5 metres with the strong winds.

BOM says that wind gusts can be a further 40% stronger than the averages provided, and maximum waves may be up to twice the height.

Mike, Cape Moreton to Point Danger is down near Brisbane. I don't think that wind warning has anything to do with a cyclone forming. They would be separate issues.

I'll go and crack another NQ Lager now (i wish)

I didn’t find the experience of Cyclone Tracy very exhilarating. The gales extended to 40 km from the centre with maximum wind gusts up to 300kph. The central pressure went off the scale at 950 hps, the storm surge at Casuarinas beach was 4 metres, and it rained 255 mm in the 12 hours of darkness, 65 people died, up to 1,000 injured. It’s serious when flying glass gashes your muscle to the bone, if you don’t know how to stop the bleeding you bleed to death, sometimes in front of your family. 70% of houses suffered serious structural damage and the bill was in excess of $800 million in 1974 dollars. How exhilarating is that?

I think you will find that it was Sunday 19 March that you were glued to the computer, and that Larry struck early Monday 20 March!
As 20 March is my birthday, I certainly remember.

You are correct. I meant to write the "morning of." Thanks for the correction!
