With due respect, Michael, the myth that Germany is a nation with a long history of waging aggressive wars - implicit in your summary - is precisely that.
My own background is Anglo and I have no personal ax to grind on this. I just don't like to see a blatant untruth gain acceptance through uncritical universal acclaim.
Substituting 'Britain' for 'Germany' would make the joke more accurate.
