QLD Opposition might request referendums

THE Queensland Opposition itself might request referendums thereby sidestepping new laws allowing the state government to sack councils that hold ballots on mergers.

Under an amendment, the new laws will also allow the government to sack and fine any council that now holds ballots asking their communities whether they support the mergers.

The amendment was made after Prime Minister John Howard promised to fund ballots through the Australian Electoral Commission (AEC).
