Road flooded Captain Cook Highway at Thomatis Creek

Following a huge rainfall overnight, the Captain Cook Highway is currently closed in both directions due to flooding at Thomatis Creek, between the Yorkeys Knob and Holloways Beach roundabouts.

According to Cairns Police, northern beach residents can still use the Cairns Western Arterial Road, Kamerunga Road, via Caravonica and Brinsmead.

CairnsBlog reader Luke, just emailed this pic, as he's stuck in traffic near the roundabout at McGregor Road, just after Trinity Park.

"It may take a couple of hours for me to get to work," he said.

Yeah, right.

The ridge coming up the coast is probably going to bring more rain. Have a look at MTSAT.

UPDATE:

Police have advised the north-bound lanes of the Captain Cook Highway have now been closed at Arnold Street at Stratford, due to flooding further north at Thomatis Creek between the Yorkeys Knob and Holloways Beach roundabouts.

The access roads to both Machans and Holloways beaches are also closed.

Residents in the Redlynch/Freshwater area are also advised that the section of Kamerunga Road between the Freshwater roundabout and Redlynch-Intake Road is also closed at Ryan Weare Park due to flooding.

8:40am: Traffic is now backed up to Clifton Beach, on the Capitan Cook Highway

Update. Add a 4 car prang at Peace Lutheran and you have total chaos. By the time people get to work, it will be time to knock off.
Makes me please that I live way south of town.

We opted not to go into work today. Fortunately I can remote access work and was able to pay the staff who were somewhat edgy when I phoned in to say I was not going to have a 3 hour drive from Clifton Beach to work.
Will set off for work early tomorrow morning, just in case.
