We still need your financial support

I will soon provide CairnsBlog readers with an update of the defamation action from the Mayor against this Blog.

The action was regarding our efforts to raise issues of concern and interest to ratepayers, especially when it relates to spending public monies.

I'd like to thank those that have so far donated to our Fighting Fund, however if you haven't, I'd encourage you to help us. It is no doubt Byrne's objective to close down our voice, and we need to stand up to this.

It will probably cost us at least $2,000 to challenge our right to air issues of interest to all residents that are soon to vote on a new Council for our City. We could of course simply signed the letter and said we got it all wrong, but our moral conscious meant we needed to explain and stand by our side of the story.

We need to stand up to this attack from our Mayor who doesn't want us to air issues he'd rather not us discuss. We should also defend our right to question and allow debate when and how our rates are spent. This is called democracy. We believe that we haven't defamed anyone, we have always welcome the opportunity to debate and engage our Mayor and this Council in matters of great concern.

It's a sad day when the leader of our city doesn't talk to citizens that have an opinion, but instead sends out defamation action to anyone that discusses publicly Council's actions that disagree. However, we know that this Blog isn't the first to get threats of legal action.

We will soon release details of the settlement and our response to his, I mean Council's Defamation letter against CairnsBlog.

If you can spare a donation, I ask you to contribute to the cause. All the account details are listed on the right-hand side of the blog.
