The Great Debaters

Early in the New Year, CairnsBlog will be hosting the Cairns premiere of a new film The Great Debaters.

The drama, staring Denzel Washington, is based on the true story, is all about a professor at a Texas college, where in 1935, he inspired students to form the school's first debate team, which went on to challenge Harvard in the national championship.

There are good reasons why CairnsBlog supports freedom of speech issues, unlike some local elected officials in our town. This is a timely film after many years of a mayor who suppresses and attempts to restrict public debate by legal action.

The premier screening in late February, will occur in partnership with Robert Pyne who is running for Division 3 as an independent in the March Council elections. Robert has had his fair share of moments in the debating spotlight, so let's say, this is a marriage of convenience!

We are also looking at running other events to encourage debate and bring together interesting speakers. These maybe stand-alone events or in conjunction with a dinner at a hotel. The object will to raise some funds for our mission, and also to network people who are motivated by participating in local issues.

We look forward to your support, in what we hope wil be the first of many such events.

Here's the preview of The Great Debaters...

Pyne (like his old man) couldn’t debate his way out of a wet paper bag – he will beat James though, as poor old Terry got the wrong division.

Sounds like a good movie!

Free speech on CairnsBlog! What a joke. The first time I asked questions I was ignored. When I asked the same questions again I was treated with contempt and called names in an utterly childish manner. I was told to prove who I was before I would be, at least, tolerated, if not treated with some respect.
