i received this e-mail today. Apparently the Cairns Yacht Club has been saved after all :
Ref: BNE16243-6

BNE2008/12219

10 November 2008

Dear Nick

I refer to your e-mail of 5 September 2008 sent to the Honourable Anna Bligh MP, Premier, regarding the Cairns Yacht Club building. The Premier has referred the issue to the Honourable Andrew McNamara MP, Minister for Sustainability, Climate Change and Innovation for response.

The Minister has noted your opposition to the demolition of the Cairns Yacht Club and your advocacy for the restoration and revitalisation of the building. As you may now know, the building has been moved from its site and will be reconstructed at the Smithfield campus of the James Cook University. This is an outcome that means the building will still be available for community use.

The Minister hopes this information is of assistance. If any further information is required, please do not hesitate to contact Fiona Gardiner of the Environmental Protection Agency on telephone 3227 6494.

Yours sincerely

A predictable response from an aptly titled government department:
Sustainability – sustained incompetence, Climate Change – going green means yacht clubs on grass, Innovation – more ways of saying the same old ‘BS’

Fom the Premier today : (they must think that if they repeat their lies often enough then they must be true,,)

Thank you for your correspondence concerning the Cairns Yacht Club. I have been requested to reply to you on the Premier’s behalf.

The Queensland Government acknowledges that the Cairns Yacht Club building remains a sentimental attraction to many long-time Cairns residents, and the decision not to heritage-list the clubhouse was made independently by the Queensland Heritage Council.

In May 2004, the Cairns Yacht Club and the Cairns Ports Limited (formerly the Cairns Port Authority) entered into a binding Memorandum of Understanding for the Cairns Ports Limited to assist the Cairns Yacht Club to relocate the old building to a new waterfront premises in the redeveloped marina.

In March 2007, the two shareholding Queensland Government Ministers for Cairns Ports Limited approved an $8.6 million funding package to resite the yacht club and build a new, state-of-the-art marina complex on the Cairns waterfront.

In order to save the clubhouse, the Government offered up to $150,000 to any organisation to acquire the building and relocate it away from its current location of Cityport.

James Cook University understands the social significance of the building and was selected as the preferred organisation by an evaluation committee that included the Cairns Regional Council. The Government provided a further $150,000 to facilitate the relocation.

The funding provided by the Government will ensure the Cairns Yacht Club building will continue to be available for community use in the future. Relics from the building will be incorporated into a defined heritage precinct within Cityport, yet will allow the continued foreshore development works on the Cairns waterfront.

Again, thank you for bringing your views to the Premier’s attention.

Yours sincerely

Parliamentary Secretary to the Premier of Queensland

What a shame those lyin' dogs called "The Queensland Labour Party" just don't come out with a simple truthful statement that goes like this ...

"the building was totally f**ked, way past the timber's use by date.
The only thing worth saving was the floor and we have spent $300,000.00 of tax payers money transporting the floor to Smithfield."

As for ... "Relics from the building will be incorporated into a defined heritage precinct within Cityport" ... more bullsh*t again.

The real memrobilia is now proudly on display in the new building care of the great efforts of the Commodore, Warner Fergusson and the members.

The Cairns Yacht Club spirit, soul and sailing is very much alive, abeit in a new building.

Yesterday there were 10 yachts competing in WAG's along with a great turnout for the school dingy sailing.

So who's crying ... ??? Only Mick Jagger, and Nick, not the real sailors.

Quickie it is a pity that you are not capable of seeing the big picture. It was never just about a few yachties and their club. I think there are many people in Cairns who agree with me that is a "crying" shame that the powers-that-be are so hellbent on destroying the Cairns waterfront. The Yacht Club was not "relocated" (what a blatant bloody lie!!) because the building was beyond repair. If that was the only reason, they could have constructed a new building. It was 'relocated' because they wanted the land.

It is interesting that in another post you say that at the next election you will vote for LNP candidate Wendy Richardson. Wendy was a high profile and very vocal opponent to the destruction of the CYC.

Doesn't that expose you for the hypocrite you are ?
