This is absolutely disgusting. I noticed the clearing to start above Palm Cove mid this year whilst I was out sea kayaking off the coast. It was funny how whilst I was out at sea I could see both the obvious clearing at False Cape which exceeds the 80m AHD contour and the new clearing going on at Palm Cove. Whoever is responsible for allowing this to happen should hang their heads in shame. So much for our highly prized green backdrop to Cairns which has been an asset for tourist appeal. Our backdrop is now a liability.!

Shame on Val, her Councillors and Boyle claiming kudos for this as a Council initiative when in fact it is just due to changes in legislation coming from above – State Government EPA. How can Council take credit for this…. it has obviously been forced on them. How much more do CRC intend to mislead the public … do they think we are fools….will they be strong enough to stand up to developers once and for all. Guess time will tell ….. meantime our waterways and Reef suffer.

Well, the story, as Tyson rightly defends, was all about the content the Cairns Post is pumping out.

So if, as you suggest, the Post printed a similar story about "some stripped-down guy" my same argument would apply.

It would hardly be any improvement at all.

Here we have a Council that should be held to account and publically questioned. The wet season is upon us bringing with it numerous and serious environmental challenges that should be reported widely to the public via the Cairns Post readership. Yet they choose to run fluffly stories with no credibility whatsoever.

Syd, I would say all three of your observations are accurate. More pertinently, perhaps, the piece under debate was palpably NOT a page-one story — even by the lowly standards practiced by ultra-lightweight tabloids like the ComPost.

A city the size of Cairns deserves a decent daily newspaper, staffed by experienced journos and led by an editor who has at least a skerrick of integrity. Unfortunately, the vast majority of newsrooms are male bastions. Their organs (pun intended) tend to reflect their preoccupations.

One of her pre-election quotes was about how the big end of town developers were running this City under a Byrne administration.

So nothing has changed?

We have swapped one arrogant prodevelopment at all costs Mayor, with another, and our lovely enviroment continues to pay a heavy toll.

A least she is ensuring that her new team of enviromental officers will have plenty of work to do in the future, with all this development in sensitive areas, and poor track records on enviromental damge that have plagued most development sites around Cairns including Hedley (part of Vision Group) when they heavily polluted Deep Creek, and were fined over $100,000 dollars.

Sadly, at the end of the day, its us rate payers/taxpayers that are paying for all the enviromental clean up, whilst the developers are raking it in and onto the next project. Once lost, our natural enviroment is lost for ever!

Aussiefem and Quickie, you seen to miss the point in all this. We've learn't a hell of a lot in the last 20 years. Things we did back then has been proved with science to be damaging. Years ago we didn't know nor care. Years ago we doidn't have the same appreciation for the environment. Farmers are far more onto the effect they have on the land they farm more than their forefathers.

Just like businesses are doing business differently, so too are the way in which we use and look after our land.

It's simply not a good idea to keep on doing the same old things the same old way.
