Festival Cairns winds up

It was perfect conditions in Australia's northern-most city tonight as about 17,500 lined the Cairns Esplanade for the final event in his year's Festival.

70 floats enthralled the crowds along the 3 km route. There was something for everyone, from marching bands, schools, community groups and, for the first time, a float from Tropical Pride.

However, brickbats to the traffic control or Council for not requesting removal of all the vehicles along the Esplanade route. This made visibility and access very difficult.

"We're just visiting from England," said one couple "it's great to see such fun in small townships like Cairns."

Every year the Festival finale “Parade of Lights” event is enjoyed by families and the community. This year’s theme was 'Love Cairns'. Besides the large traffic delays and obvious parking difficulties, there were few reported problems.

Loved the comment from the English visitors, a small township! I hope His Arrogance the Mayor reads that, he may get the picture on what people think of his great vision.

Signs posted some time ago (still there) stated that the Esplanade would be closed to traffic between "1am and 9pm". When it wasnt closed residents assumed the "1 am" must have been a signage typo for 1pm. But then the Esplanade wasn't actually closed until 3 or was it even 4pm before the parade?

Maybe someone should ask council why? They usually respond to such queries. Same thing happened last year but my recollection is that in prior years the Esplanade was pretty clear for the parade?
